Telephony Technology Terminology

  • PBx: (Private Branch Exchange), one of the main purposes of a PBx is to pool the telco trunks, thus lowering the required cost of a telco line for each user of the telephone system.  
  • IP PBx: This short explanation is a slight over simplification... But, an IP PBx is the same thing as the PBx described above, with the added technology of VoIP, (Voice over Internet Protocol or IP).
  • On- Premise: The PBx hardware & software are installed on a server on your premises. 
  • Hosted & Virtual:  Both VoIP & IP PBx systems transmit calls over the Internet as data. Hardware & software are installed on servers off-site, often in a large data center. 
  • Cloud: Cloud Computing”, “In the Cloud” refers to software features delivered over the internet. 
  • SaaS: “Software as a Service” software licensed on a subscription basis and is centrally hosted.

Some Costing Myths Explained 

Monthly leasing is cheaper? This may appear to be a low cost option, however – mid term recurring costs at (2+ years) can cost considerably more. And at the end of the contract – there's absolutely nothing to show for your investment! 

Paying per month is easier on cash flow? True/Maybe – and many businesses prefer this. However, on-premises IP PBx solutions are available in a number of ways including: Fair Market Value & $1 Buy Out leasing with just two monthly payments as a down payment/security deposit. I'm not a CPA, but that seems to be 100% OPEX-based** costs.

Hosted calls can be cheaper? 

The cost for local & long-distance calls are usually cheaper than traditional P.O.T.S. lines from LECs like AT&T or Verizon. But,  the bottom line reveals that calling cost is exactly the same from competitive CLECs such as TPx, Spectrum or Windstream. So, the heart of the matter is most of KC's clients with a traditional IP PBx with T1/PRIs get unlimited local calling & 1,000 minutes of long distance, per user/per month; "pooled."  e.g. (10 users = 10,000 pooled minutes long-distance & unlimited local.)

No upfront costs with Hosted? 

The vast majority of new hosted solutions require the cost of new Polycom VoIP Telephones and are rarely 100% OPEX-based** costs.

Structured Cabling… is defined as building or campus telecommunications cabling infrastructure that consists of a number of standardized smaller elements (structured).

A properly designed and installed structured cabling system provides a cabling infrastructure that delivers predictable performance as well as having the flexibility to accommodate moves, adds and changes; maximizes system availability, provides redundancy; and future proofs the usability of the cabling system.
