Making the Right Decision
Knowledge is power. Knowing what you should look for in an Internet connection can spell the difference between profit and loss, between achieving optimum production and poor delivery times.
Almost all businesses now consider the Internet as an indispensable tool for their daily operations. A day without Internet connectivity, or even just slow connectivity, could translate to decreased productivity and profit loss. Your Internet connection options depend on what your business needs from its Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Almost all businesses now consider the Internet as an indispensable tool for their daily operations. A day without Internet connectivity, or even just slow connectivity, could translate to decreased productivity and profit loss. Your Internet connection options depend on what your business needs from its Internet Service Provider (ISP). Here are few things that can help in choosing best provider:
1. Bandwidth
Bandwidth is one of the key characteristics of any connection. The needed bandwidth depends on the nature and size of business operations. Ask yourself: how fast does the connection needs to be, and how many devices will be connected?
2. Ethernet over Copper/DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
Considering the fact that Ethernet over copper can be deployed via the conventional twisted telephone cables, it proves to be an extremely affordable technology. Most devices already have this kind of telephone wiring infrastructure and therefore a client really does not have to invest in additional cabling.
3. Cable
Cable Internet mainly relies on standard coaxial cable lines that were originally run to provide television service. Available and easily connected in most areas with a variety of speed options. Internet speeds can throttle because you'll share a connection with users in you area and most cable internet providers have data caps and will throttle your internet speed or charge additional fees when the max has been hit
4. Fiber
For larger businesses, this option is better than DSL or cable as you almost always get equal download and upload bandwidth speeds. Although some fiber optic cables may have a higher initial cost than copper, the durability and reliability of fiber can make the total cost of ownership (TCO) lower. And, costs continue to decrease for fiber optic cables and related components as technology advances
5. Security
No one can guarantee that you will be protected from spam, spyware, viral threats, and even data intrusions. However, the company you choose as your ISP should be committed to the highest possible level of security. Security Service Providers can managed endpoints and perimeters including workstations, servers and firewalls. They typically have inhouse security experts who monitor and respond to threats.
6. Accessible Support
When your Internet drops, you need reliable customer support to swiftly fix the issue. In most cases, solid customer support is worth the extra expense. Apart from fantastic customer care reviews, opt for a provider who offers 24/7 on-shore technical support.
7. Timely Troubleshooting Response
How quickly does the ISP respond to a reported outage or send their field service techs on-site if a failure occurs? Check for field response policies and make sure that they meet your business needs as well as possible worst-case scenarios.
8. Shorter Installation Timelines
Some ISPs can install quickly and to your convenience, and others might have you waiting for a while. Choose a service which works for you long-term but also is willing to accommodate you now.
9. Future-Oriented
These days, everything evolves so rapidly that you never know when a new Internet technology will surface. It pays to work with a provider who understands the need to be future-oriented.
10. Reliable Upload and Download Speeds
Does your enterprise require faster-than-normal upload and download speeds? Or do your operations require only the usual web browsing and mail setup? There is no point in paying extra for functionality you’re not using, so know your priorities.
11. Routing
At its core, the Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link billions of devices worldwide. An ISP connects your office network to the many interconnected computer networks that make up the Internet. The connection to every network in the world is known as a route. What your business cares about is being able to get to every network in the world you need to for your business to succeed.

A good Internet provider will offer a service that suits your business’s individual needs. Look for a provider that offers the best benefit-to-cost ratio, one that has your company’s best interest at heart.
The Type of Service
There are two main categories of internet connection services offered by providers. The first type is the classic broadband connection commonly found in homes or small offices. This connection is meant for domestic use and it often comes with some reliability issues. Internet service providers are famous for their broadband volatility, so this may not be the best option for business use.
The second category is deployed upon an SLA (Service Level Agreement). This forms a High Availability plan, in which the service provider ensures an uptime of, in most cases, 99.99% - a number that equates to under two hours a year of downtime. These kinds of connections are obviously a lot more expensive than the regular broadband. If you have a business that relies heavily on the Internet for inventory, sales, communication or other crucial factors, spending a little extra on an Internet plan could prove valuable in the long run.
Connection Speed
Having a working Internet connection is crucial in many environments. To avoid wasting time and money, it is vital to calculate just how much bandwidth your company needs. If you have inadequate bandwidth, VoIP phones will suffer the loss of not being able to communicate with customers, and some departments may be unable to function without their IT systems.
To avoid running out of bandwidth, calculate the amount needed and speak to your ISP. Remember, speed and reliability of service are the two most important factors. Both need to be present when making your choice between Internet service providers.
